Acting smarter to gain advantage

In a well-attended session, the Edinburgh group were treated to an entertaining lunchtime talk by John Shaw of The Theatre of Ideas. John described himself and his colleague as facilitators, and they work with organisations to help them become more creative in their thinking and planning. He demonstrated this by inviting the group to participate in practical exercises which challenged our traditional ways of thinking. This included an exercise where pairs shook hands, froze then one person broke away and assumed a new pose which altered the interpretation of the scene. There was initial embarrassment and confusion, then laughter and thoughtfulness as the power of the learning came through - don’t always look at things in the traditional way – extend your thinking to make new interpretations of the available information. John explained how he and his colleague use this and other techniques from the worlds of theatre, advertising and marketing to help business people ‘unstick’ their thinking and become more innovative in their approach. All in all, a very entertaining and different lunchtime session!
