Understanding your Personality Style Profile (PSP)
To be successful in your communications, you first need to understand your own personality style and how you impact on others, explained people development specialist Carolyn Pickin, Director of Motiv8 Development, during the September event in Birmingham.
Carolyn stressed that there is no right or wrong, good or bad personality profile but that it is all about preferences.
Prior to the event members had been given the opportunity to complete a PSP questionnaire which explored:
- where you prefer to get and focus your energy or attention
- how you prefer to gather information
- the process you prefer to use in coming to decisions
- how you prefer to deal with the world around your lifestyle
Carolyn then prepared a confidential, non-judgmental, personal profile which revealed how the individual interacts with others and how they deal with all kinds of real-life situations.
During a very interactive session members were then, where possible, grouped together with those of a similar profile and asked to prepare a dream holiday poster, which then had to be presented back to the whole group.
Each groups approach to this task, how it was collated and then delivered provided an entertaining insight into the various ways in which different personalities approach information and decision making.
The session promoted a positive approach to individual differences, demonstrating that different working styles can be complementary, rather than a source of friction and that by understanding your own style and those of others you can develop relevant skills to analyse successful and not so successful interactions and be flexible.
